Word numbers by type of business
Which words suit restaurants, trades, law firms, practices, shops and more, with word numbers for each kind of business.
Start with where customers meet the number
A number on a truck or a sign needs a word that reads at a glance. A number heard on the radio needs a word that is easy to spell. A number on a menu, a card or a bag can carry a longer word. The right word follows from where your callers find you.
Name what you do, not who you are
Business names are usually too long to spell, and callers already know your name. A word that names the service, like ROOF, TEETH or PIZZA, tells a new customer what the number is for.

Rules that apply to some trades
- Law firms: lawyer advertising is regulated by each state. ABA Model Rule 7.1 says a lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer's services, so check a word that suggests a result first.
- Real estate: REALTOR® is a collective membership mark of the National Association of REALTORS®, and non-members are not permitted to use it.
- Tax and finance: the FTC's Government and Business Impersonation Rule, in effect since April 1, 2024, prohibits posing as a government agency or falsely claiming to be affiliated with one. Avoid words that could make callers think they reached one.
- Cannabis: check your state's advertising rules before a word goes on signs or packaging.
